ECU Remapping
ChipTuners are specialists in ECU remapping. Since the early 1990’s and the onboard computer controlling most engines (the ECU). This controls the ignition timing, fuelling and boost pressure for all engine speeds and loads. ECU remapping allows the way the engine is controlled to be changed to give better performance and a more engaging drive.
ECU remapping replaces the default settings on the ECU and overwrites it with new software that has been designed to optimise the cars performance. Essentially the programme that contros how the engine works is reconfigured through the OBD port and the new version is designed for the specific car, specific to climate and driver’s aims on tuning.
The ability to flash directly through the OBD allowed the tuning industry to develop quicker processes and ChipTuners to develop their software.
So, why would you want to remap your ECU?
The overall and torque and power can be noticeably increased, your engine will respond better when the accelerator is pressed. Smooth delivery of power making it easier and safer to overtake. Improved throttle response and the rev range will be enhanced.
There can be effects on fuel consumption, if driving style is not changed then often fuel economy can be improved but if drivers make the most of the increased power and torque throughout the rev range then fuel consumption can increase.
The ECU remapping in itself does not affect the expected longevity of your engine however your driving style and use of the power and being driven harder then naturally this can decrease the life of your engine.
